Radiation therapy plays an important role in the treatment of cancer patients. About 40 to 50 percent of patients go through radiation therapy as their only treatment or in combination with other treatments (including chemotherapy or surgery). There are different methods of radiation therapy, but the best irradiation method is selected based on the type, size, shape, location and position of the tumor.
In radiation therapy, the energy (dose) from the radiation is transferred to the cancer tissue and causes tumor destruction. The goal is to deliver maximum dose of radiation to tumor and to limit the dose to healthy tissue as much as possible.
